Paper Kintsugi Technique - Stampin With Friends Blog Hop

Hi friends,
Welcome back to my blog - this week we are creating a card using the Paper Kintsugi Technique.  Now I have to be honest - I have never heard of this before and had to do a bit of research to find out what is was.  And I have to say - I love what I saw.  Here's a bit of a teaser.

In a nutshell, Kintsugi means "golden joinery" and is a form of pottery repair used by the Japanese.  They used gold, silver or platinum to repair broken pieces of pottery creating a more beautiful piece than before.  It adds character to the pottery by "finding beauty in the broken".

It all started with finding the right piece of Designer Series Paper for the card and then coordinating the cardstock.  I went with Pretty Peackock (cut at 21 x 15cm and scored at 10.5 cm along the long side), Basic White (14.2 x 9.9 cm) and Fresh as a Daisy DSP (13.7 x 9.4 cm).

I must say, I felt a bit intimidated by this hop when I first saw it and wasn't sure I was up to the challenge.  Having completed it though, I had so much fun, and actually enjoyed the process.  I found it to be very therapeutic - tearing paper and putting it back together like a jigsaw puzzle.  I hope you give it a go too.

Take your DSP (there are so many great colours and designs to choose from) and tear it into 3 or 4 pieces.  Take your time and don't rush this step because you don't want too much of the white paper exposed when you tear it.  I just held it in both hands and tore little sections at a time to make sure it stayed reasonably neat and didn't fray too much.

After you have torn the paper, lay it out together again to help you decide which edges to emboss.  Look at which edges will sit on top nicely and cover the white edges.  These are the pieces to emboss (and it may not be the full length of the tear). Carefully apply Versamark Ink along the edges.

Apply the embossing powder of your choice and then use the heat gun to seal the embossing powder.  Continue working piece by piece until all the appropriate edges are embossed.

As you can see here, not all the edges need to be done.  Now its time to start putting the jigsaw back together.  This was the fun bit, it reminded me of when I was little and doing puzzles with my nan and uncles.  There was always a puzzle out on the table and I loved looking at the shapes and working out if it was the right piece or not.  Happy memories.

Piece by piece, rebuild the DSP.  I used the Multipurpose glue for this step because I could get the adhesive right to the edge, and I had a bit of time to wriggle the paper around to make sure it was in the perfect spot.

It was fun to watch the reconstruction and this is about where I fell in love with this technique.  They were right - I certainly did find beauty in the broken.

The final piece in place, all that was left to do now was to creat the sentiment, add some bling and put it all together.

I decided to make this a simple Thank You card using a stamp from the Pansy Patch Stamp set and again used the Versamark Ink and the Gold Embossing Powder.  I cut leaves from Gold Foil Paper using the Timeless Arrangement Dies.

So here, I have used the Stampin' Seal to adhere the front to the card base, attached some of the leaves to the card front and some to the sentiment, then popped the sentiment up using dimensionals.

And hey presto, there it is.  (It's really hard to photograph a card with the embossing powder at the right angle lol).  This was so much fun, I have already chosen my next couple of DSP pieces to make more - you can see them on my FB page as I complete them and pop them up there.

I hope you enjoyed my trip down memory lane and the discovery of new yet old techniques.  Please join the rest of my frineds and follow along to look at the beautiful cards they have created as well.  If you love what you see, please leave a comment - we all love a little pat on the back sometimes 😄
